It depends on whether you have a swarm or a colony. A swarm is a cluster of bees resting in the open while scouts look for a home. A colony has already moved into a cavity, built wax comb and started storing honey. The first is a short visit, the second is a proper job.
For a colony, the bees are treated at the entrance with a registered product. Returning foragers carry it inside, and activity stops over the following day or so. We then open the cavity, cut out every piece of comb and honey, clean it, and seal the gap so the smell cannot pull in another swarm.
Skipping the cut out is the common mistake. Comb left behind melts in summer, soaks honey into plaster and timber, and draws robbing bees, ants and wax moth. It is also the reason bees keep coming back to the same wall.
