What is a bee swarm, and why act quickly?
Reviewed by the Bees and Wasps Removal team
A swarm is half of a honey bee colony, with a queen, that has left its old home to start a new one. It hangs in a cluster on a branch, post or eave while scout bees search for a cavity. That pause can last an hour or a few days.
A swarm in the open is not yet a hive. There is no comb to cut out and nothing inside your walls, which is why swarm removal is quick and priced from $149. The risk is that the scouts choose your roof, chimney or wall, and the same bees become a cut out job from $495.
Swarm season in Victoria runs mainly through spring into early summer, roughly September to December, with the busiest weeks on warm, still days after rain.

Looking for a bee swarm collector near me?
Plenty of people search for a collector. Here is how our honey bee swarm removal differs.
We treat and remove
We are a pest control team, not a collector. Swarm of bees removal with us means the cluster is treated and bagged, then taken away.
When a collector suits you
If the swarm is low, in the open and you would rather it went to a hive, a registered beekeeper, not a pest control service, may collect it. We will tell you that honestly.
When it cannot wait
A swarm on a busy doorway, a school fence or near someone allergic usually cannot wait for a collector to turn up. That is when people call us.
When it is already inside
If the bees have already gone into a wall, roof or chimney, it is no longer a swarm, and collection is off the table. It becomes a cut out.
Swarm of bees removal or a hive job?
These clues tell us on the phone which job you have.
A hanging ball
A dense cluster in the open, often the size of a football. That is a swarm.
It appeared today
A swarm arrives in minutes with a loud roar of bees overhead.
Scouts at a gap
A few bees inspecting a vent or eave while the cluster waits. Call before the rest follow.
Traffic into a wall
A steady stream in and out of one hole for days. That is a colony.
Comb visible
Wax comb on a branch or under an eave means it has settled. Still no wall work though.
Warm, still weather
Swarms fly on warm spring days. A sudden cold snap can keep one hanging longer.
Bee swarm in chimney: act the same day
An unused chimney is one of the most common places a Victorian swarm moves into, especially in older homes in Ballarat, Bendigo and the inner suburbs.
- 1Close the fireplace damper and the room door, and seal the fireplace opening with cardboard and tape.
- 2Do not light a fire to smoke them out. Melting wax and honey can run down the flue, and bees can be forced into the room.
- 3Ring early. A fresh swarm in a flue is simpler than a colony that has built comb for weeks.
- 4Once it is dealt with, fit a cowl or mesh cap so the flue cannot be used again.
Bee swarm removal in five steps
Most swarm visits are finished in under an hour.
Confirm
We check it is a swarm and not the front of an established colony.
Set up
People and pets kept clear, ladder or pole set up for the height.
Treat
The cluster is treated with a registered product.
Bag
The swarm is bagged and taken away, stragglers cleared.
Check
Nearby eaves, vents and chimneys checked for scouts that went in.
Stopping a bee swarm from moving in
A swarm only becomes a hive if it finds a cavity. Make yours hard to find.
Cap disused chimney flues before September.
Mesh wall vents and weep holes on sheltered walls.
Close gaps where eave linings meet brickwork.
Keep old water meter boxes, compost bins and sheds closed.
Watch for scouts inspecting a gap and call early.
Do not hose or spray a swarm, it can break up and scatter into the roof.
Bee swarm removal questions
Send us a photo of the swarm from a safe distance and we can usually price it straight away.
Call 0435 073 966How much does bee swarm removal cost?
A swarm in the open starts from $149 including GST. A swarm at height is priced on the phone, and one that has moved into a chimney or wall is priced as a cut out.
Is bee swarm removal victoria wide available in spring?
Yes. Spring is our busiest season, and we book swarms across metro and regional Victoria. Ring with your postcode for the soonest time.
Will a swarm leave on its own?
Often, within hours or a few days. The risk is where it goes. If the scouts have picked a gap in your house, it may move straight in.
Can I get bee swarm removal near me today?
Frequently, yes. Swarms are treated as urgent because they can move at any moment. We will give you a real time on the phone.
Is honey bee swarm removal dangerous?
A swarm is usually calm because it has no comb or brood to defend, but it can become defensive if disturbed. Keep people and pets away and do not spray it.
Do you collect swarms for beekeepers?
No. We are not beekeepers and do not collect or keep bees. Where a registered beekeeper rather than us could collect a swarm, we will say so.
Why is there a swarm in my chimney?
An open flue is a dry, dark cavity with a small entrance, exactly what scouts look for. Capping the flue is the long term fix.
How high can you reach a swarm?
Most garden and eave swarms are within ladder reach. Very high tree swarms are priced on the phone once we know the height and access.
What time of year do swarms happen?
In Victoria mainly from September to December, with the peak on warm spring days, and a smaller number into summer.
What if the swarm is on my neighbour's property?
We need the owner's permission to work there. Many neighbours are happy to share the cost when it is on the fence line.
Is there comb to clean up after a swarm?
Not if we get there before it settles. A swarm that has hung for days may start small combs, which we remove on the same visit.
