Quick answer

Why is European wasp removal different?

Reviewed by the Bees and Wasps Removal team

The European wasp is an introduced pest in Victoria. It builds a grey papery nest hidden in the ground, in wall cavities, roof voids, retaining walls and tree hollows, so most people only see the wasps, not the nest.

Unlike a bee, a European wasp can sting more than once, and a disturbed nest defends itself hard. They are drawn to meat and sweet food, which is why they turn up at barbecues, bins and pet bowls. In mild winters some nests keep going, and a nest that survives into its second year can become very large.

European wasp extermination is not a spray around the yard. It starts with finding the nest by following the flight line, then treating it through the entrance with a registered insecticide. For a ground nest, the entrance is left open so returning wasps pick up the treatment.

Underground wasp nest removal

A ground nest is the most common European wasp nest we treat, and the one most people find by accident.

What it looks like

A small hole in the lawn, a garden bed or under a paver, with wasps flying straight in and out. The nest itself is below ground and can be large.

How to remove ground wasp nest safely

Do not pour petrol or boiling water in, and do not block the hole. The nest is treated through the entrance, ideally early or late in the day.

After treatment

Activity drops within hours. Keep people, pets and the mower away for the rest of the day, and leave the hole open.

Ground wasp nest removal price

Ground nests are priced as difficult access, from $249 to $399 depending on where the entrance is and what is over it.

Nest eradication

European wasp nest eradication: do and do not

European wasp nest eradication goes wrong most often when someone tries it with a hose, a shovel or a can of fly spray.

  • 1Do keep children and pets away from the entrance and stop mowing near it.
  • 2Do not block a ground or wall entrance; the wasps will find another way out, sometimes indoors.
  • 3Do not use petrol or fire. It is dangerous and often does not reach the nest.
  • 4Do call 000 if someone has breathing trouble or swelling after a sting.

European wasp removal questions

Tell us where the wasps feed and which way they fly. It is the quickest way to find a hidden nest.

Call 0435 073 966
How much does European wasp nest removal cost?

Most European wasp nests are hidden in the ground or a wall and are priced from $249 to $399 depending on access. An exposed nest starts from $159.

Is European wasp extermination safe for my family?

We use registered products according to the label and ask you to keep people and pets away from the treated entrance for the rest of the day.

How do I find an underground wasp nest?

Watch where wasps fly after feeding, and look for a small hole with steady traffic. Do not poke it. Tell us roughly where and we will find it.

Can I pour something down the hole?

We advise against it. Petrol and boiling water are dangerous and often miss most of the nest, and blocking the hole can push wasps elsewhere.

Do you do european wasp removal victoria wide?

Yes, across metro and regional Victoria. Ring with your postcode for the soonest day.

Why are European wasps worse in autumn?

Nests are at their largest late in the season and wasps look harder for sugary food, so contact with people goes up.

Can a European wasp sting more than once?

Yes. Unlike a honey bee, it does not lose its sting, which is why a disturbed nest is dangerous.

Will the nest die off in winter?

Often, but not always. In mild Victorian winters some nests survive and grow very large the following year.

Do you remove the nest after treatment?

Ground nests are left in place and treated through the entrance. Wall nests can be cut out if you want the wall opened, quoted separately.

How do I stop European wasps at my barbecue?

Treat the nest, keep food and drinks covered, bins closed and pet food inside. Traps catch wasps but do not remove a nest.

Is ground wasp nest removal done in one visit?

Almost always. The warranty covers a return visit if that nest becomes active again within six months.
