Quick answer

How do you remove a wasp nest from a wall cavity?

Reviewed by the Bees and Wasps Removal team

Wasp nest removal in wall cavity spaces starts at the entrance: usually a weep hole, a vent, a gap under the eaves or a split in the cladding. We treat the nest through that entrance with a registered insecticide dust or foam that spreads through the nest.

The entrance is then left open for a day or two so returning wasps carry the treatment in. Blocking it early is the mistake that sends wasps chewing through plaster into bedrooms and bathrooms.

Once the nest is dead, most people leave it in the wall. If you would like the comb cut out, for example because a wall is being renovated or the nest is very large, we open the wall and quote that separately.

Where they build

Remove wasp nest from house walls, roofs and eaves

Where the nest is changes how we reach it. These are the four we see most.

Wasp nest removal inside wall

Brick veneer and weatherboard walls with weep holes or vents. Treated at the entry; comb cut out only on request.

Remove wasp nest from eaves

Nests under the soffit or in the gap where the eave meets the wall. Exposed nests are taken down after treatment.

Roof voids

Wasps using a gap in tiles, ridge capping or barge boards. Treated from outside or from the roof space.

Wasp nest in chimney

Open flues and chimney breasts. The flue is treated and a cap is recommended so it is not reused.

Is it in the wall?

Signs of a wasp nest in the wall

You rarely see the nest. You see the traffic, hear the noise, or find wasps indoors.

Traffic at a weep hole

Wasps flying in and out of one gap in the brickwork or cladding.

Wasps in one room

Wasps turning up at the same window or light fitting, day after day.

A soft spot in plaster

A patch of plaster that looks damp, bulging or chewed. Do not press on it.

Scratching or rustling

A papery crackle in the wall on a warm afternoon.

Wasps at the eaves

Wasps disappearing into the gap between the eave lining and the wall.

Late summer surge

Traffic that builds sharply from February into autumn.

Questions

Wasp nest in wall questions

Seen wasps inside the house? Tell us which room. It helps us plan where to treat.

Call 0435 073 966
How much does wasp nest in wall removal cost?

Nests in walls, roofs and chimneys are priced as difficult access, from $249 to $399 depending on height and entry. Opening the wall to cut the nest out is quoted separately.

Should I block the hole the wasps use?

No. Blocking a live entry can make the wasps chew through plaster into the room. Leave it open and ring us.

Do you remove the nest from the wall?

Only if you want it. Most treated nests are left in the wall. If you want the comb out, we open the wall and quote it first.

Can wasps chew through plaster?

European wasps can chew through plasterboard, especially when their entrance is blocked. It is one reason to treat early.

How do you remove wasp nest in wall cavities of brick homes?

Through the weep hole or gap they use, with a dust or foam that spreads through the nest. The entry stays open afterwards.

Can you remove wasp nest from eaves on a two storey house?

Yes. High eave nests are treated with extension equipment or from a ladder and taken down where they can be reached.

Is a wasp nest in chimney common?

Less common than bees, but it happens. The flue is treated and we recommend a cap afterwards.

Will the dead nest smell?

Wasp nests are paper and do not hold honey, so a dead nest in a wall rarely smells. That is different from a bee colony.

Is it safe to sleep in the room next to the wall?

Usually yes. Keep windows closed on that side for the day and call us if wasps appear inside.

How do I remove wasp nest from house exteriors myself?

Small exposed paper wasp nests are sometimes done by homeowners. Nests in walls and roofs are best left to us.

Is the treatment covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every wall, roof or eave nest we treat carries a 6 month warranty on that nest.
